Zip code 30536 (Ellijay, Gilmer County) took hail on May 8, 2024: the radar estimate peaked at 1.01 inches, quarter size. That ranks 3rd of 11 hail days of three quarters of an inch or more in 30536 since October 2020.
What hail this size does to a roof
Quarter size hail is the size most often behind roof damage claims. It can bruise shingles and dent soft metals, especially on roofs more than a few years old. That was about 2.4 years ago. Policies set deadlines for reporting a loss and for lawsuits, so check yours before assuming an older storm can still be claimed. Damage from it can still matter when a newer storm hits.
